I’ve been thinking a lot about what Kimberly’s neighbors must be going through right now. Those who saw her daily or exchanged pleasantries at the local stores will feel her absence in a way that only a close-knit community can. It’s so unsettling to wrap your mind around the fact that someone you saw going about their day with a smile could be gone so suddenly because of such a senseless act. The community’s quick action in cooperating with law enforcement is truly commendable and shows how tight-knit they were. It’s bittersweet, though, because while it’s a step towards justice, it doesn’t bring her back or fill the void her absence has left, particularly in a place where everyone knows everyone else. This is such a tragic reminder of how precious and unpredictable life is. If anyone from Roanoke is reading, please know that many of us are keeping you in our thoughts during this difficult time. I hope the memory of Kimberly’s warmth and friendly presence can somehow bring a measure of comfort to those who knew her best.
