I’ve been thinking a lot about Michelle Valdez and the other victims found at the West Mesa site. It’s so difficult to imagine the pain her family must have felt, not only losing Michelle but also her unborn child. Whenever I drive past that area, I’m reminded of how many lives were altered forever by what happened there. I’ve been particularly struck by the fact that there hasn’t been closure for the families. It’s frustrating and heartbreaking to see the lack of resolution in this case. I know the authorities have looked into people like Lorenzo Montoya and Joseph Blea, but it’s baffling how nothing definitive has surfaced. It’s almost like the desert holds onto its secrets as tightly as it did their remains for all those years. It makes me wonder about the DNA efforts the families have been advocating for. Could expanding those comparisons bring some long overdue answers? If anyone out there has thoughts or knows more about how those processes work, I’m really curious. I hope technology and persistence eventually bring Michelle's family—and the other families—some peace.
