I wanted to talk about the community response to Janiyah Batey’s tragic death. It’s been moving to see how people have come together to support her family. There’s a mural that’s being painted at the Buffalo Trail Apartments in honor of her life, and I think it speaks volumes about how deeply her loss is felt by those who knew her and even those who didn’t. What also stands out to me is how this incident has sparked conversations about safety and support for youth in the Dickerson Pike area. This tragedy was so senseless, and I think it’s a reminder of the real need to bring more resources and positive engagement to our neighborhoods. I hope Janiyah’s story can be a catalyst for change, both in honoring her memory and in striving for a safer community for everyone.
