I can’t shake the sadness I feel when I think about DaShawn “Lil Ike” Guyton’s case. It hits home for many of us in the Grand Rapids community, not just because of the tragedy of a young life lost but because Lil Ike was so well-known around the southeast side. The fact that it happened in a place as public as Mackay-Jaycees Park, where so many of us take our families, just adds to the pain. It’s hard to comprehend that something so violent could happen there on a weekend evening. For Lil Ike’s friends and family, the waiting for answers has to be unbearable. I hope anyone with any piece of information feels compelled to come forward. It doesn’t matter how small it might seem—it could be the piece that helps bring some justice for him and peace for those who loved him. The community's been through a lot this year, and for those of us who frequent the park, we need to watch out for each other now more than ever. My thoughts are with Lil Ike's family and all the other families who have lost loved ones.
