I've been following Shela Polly's case for a while, and what really strikes me about this is the role DNA played in linking Ronald Ward so conclusively to her murder. Considering the odds of a random match were something like 1 in 43 billion, it's hard to overstate how important those results were. I remember back in 2000, DNA tech wasn’t as advanced as it is now, so it’s incredible the California Department of Justice could provide such conclusive evidence by 2003. It must have been a double-edged sword for Shela’s family and friends – relief that justice was served, but also the pain of hearing all those details again years later. My heart goes out to them. I also wonder how many more cases could be solved with similar evidence that just hasn’t been processed yet. Thoughts?
