I was thinking today about how society failed Debbie Abernathy and the countless other women who fell victim to Gary Ridgway. It’s so troubling to think about the risks she faced. In 1983, Debbie went missing from an area notorious for violence against sex workers. It's infuriating that these vulnerable areas were so well-known yet so dangerous. Despite the risks, Debbie’s move into sex work was her way of trying to provide for her young son and herself. The fact that women like her were left to fend for themselves in such perilous environments reflects a broader societal neglect that allowed predators like Ridgway to thrive for so long.
I can't help but reflect on how different things might have been if there had been more support systems in place back then for women in these situations. Imagine a world where women don’t have to put their safety on the line just to make ends meet. To Debbie’s family and friends, I am so sorry for the pain and sorrow you've endured—and continue to endure—due to these systemic failures. I hope that by remembering Debbie and others like her, we can work towards a future that offers more protection and support from these kinds of vulnerabilities.
