I can't stop thinking about the surveillance footage of Carl Thurmond's murder. It gnaws at me how exposed and vulnerable he was in those tragic moments. The way he was walking, just going about his day, is a haunting reminder of how fragile life can be. What's been on my mind is how this neighborhood, near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Concordia, is now marked forever by this senseless act of violence. It's moved many of us to question what more we can do to prevent these tragedies in our own communities. We don't need more cautionary tales, we need action and support for those who feel that violence is their only means of expression. For Carl’s family, I hope that finding those answers can be part of their healing process. They—alongside the rest of us—deserve closure and the peace of knowing that we can make our streets safer for everyone. Has anyone heard if there are upcoming community meetings or vigil events planned to promote safety or to remember Carl? It feels like there’s more we can do together.
