I’ve been thinking a lot about Hassan Savyid and the other victims of Oakland's 2011 violence. From what I understand, East Oakland has seen so many families torn apart because of the constant threat of gun violence. It’s so frustrating knowing that some of these cases are still unresolved after all these years. What really gets me is the sheer number of unsolved cases. Having a 29% clearance rate is just devastating, and the lack of resources for the detectives must be incredibly limiting. For the families, knowing help is out there but spread so thin must be incredibly painful. It’s important for us to remember that behind each statistic is a person whose life mattered, like Hassan. I often wonder what more can be done to bridge the mistrust between the community and law enforcement. Initiatives like Operation Ceasefire sound promising in theory, but have they really been effective? In a city plagued by complex socio-economic issues, how do we make sure these programs move from paper to real, impactful change? My thoughts are with Hassan's loved ones and everyone else dealing with similar losses. It’s a sobering reminder that these aren’t just numbers—they’re real people, and their stories matter.
