Zackery Alan Melton was my beloved son. He was murdered defending a woman from violent sex offender 46 year old Tyrone Jones of 26 Westminster Ave. After he murdered my son he kidnapped the woman my son died for. He was finally captured on May of 2025. His bail was set at 3.15 million cash bond. His preliminary hearing was in July of 2025. He has been charged with 8 counts. First degree murder, Kidnapping, domestic violence, a felon in possession of ammunition, a felon in possession of a firearm and a few more. The perp has insisted on a speedy trial. His trial will he sometime in October at the LAX courthouse. I am trying all I can to be there. If you would like more information please reach out. My son was unarmed he didn't have his shoes on. He heard a woman whom he barely knew screaming he went to aid her. There were many people around and my son was the only one to step in and defend her. He has done the same before he just died this time.

My condolences for your loss. You raised a morally grounded son. He stepped in where there was need. He was a beautiful soul that made the world a better place. Thank you.

I live in Venice and I remember this story very clearly. So sick and disgusting how some people are. I'm so so very sorry for your loss and hopefully this guy goes away for life! I still never understand them setting bail for crimes like this.

I was told the reason he has a bond is because he has never committed murder before. But the bond was really high and it had to be all cash in full. They set it to where he couldn't bail out and it gave the detectives time to build their case. The DA already backed the LAPD before he was captured. A rarity in CA. I have never been to California. It's unfortunate I am coming to represent my son who was shot dead by a man who had no business being on the streets much less with a gun to murder my son when he turned his back. My son died in a parking lot of a dog park. That hurts my soul.

My son did not know the perpetrator.

I'm devastated by what happened to Zackery Melton, known to so many as "Turtle." I've been following this tragedy closely and wanted to point out how deeply ingrained he was in the community. It's incredible to hear about his bravery in that moment, standing up against someone like Tyrone Jones, whose violent history makes him a significant danger.
Zackery may have lived a transient lifestyle, but his presence in Venice was one of stability for the people around him. His protective nature and kindness seem to have left a lasting impression, particularly since he was always looking out for others, including that woman he tried to help that night.
It's so frustrating knowing that Jones is still out there, and I really hope the LAPD ramps up their efforts to bring him to justice swiftly. But until then, let's remember Turtle's legacy, not just as a victim but as a hero who stood up when it mattered most. Keeping his family, especially little Lyra and the baby on the way, in my thoughts during this tough time. If anyone knows anything, even the smallest detail, hopefully they’ll come forward to help finally bring some peace to Zackery's family and our community.

Thank you so much for your kind words about my beloved Zackery. He was one of a kind. His legacy is my goal. Tyrone Jones has been caught as is facing the fullest extent of the law.

Has anyone else been following the case of Zackery “Turtle” Melton? His story strikes a deep chord, especially given his reputation for looking out for others in the community. I was particularly touched to hear about the memorial at Westminster Dog Park. It’s a fitting tribute to someone who was such a staple in that area, often with his beloved Max by his side.
It’s truly inspiring how the Venice community has come together to honor Turtle’s memory, showing just how much of an impact he made on everyone around him. His parents, Karen Webb and Mark Melton, must be going through an incredibly difficult time, and my thoughts are with them and his young daughter, Lyra.
If you’ve been to the memorial or heard anything recently about the investigation, I’d appreciate you sharing. Keeping this story alive feels like a small way to support his family and ensure justice is served. Thanks for listening.

Zackery is so missed by all of us. His father and I have been so affected by this. I now am helping raise his son Gunner who was born after his death on May 22. We have received so much love and it touches my soul to know his story resonates with so many.
