I've been thinking about the courage and strength it takes to walk away from a situation you know could be unsafe, like what Cheryl attempted that night when she declined a ride and decided to walk. It's easy for us to say in hindsight how risky it was, but we have to remember she was making the best decision she could for her and little Jamaree. Nobody could have expected the encounter with Carl Harris to end so devastatingly. It's heartbreaking not only because of the injustice Cheryl faced but also because she didn't have the chance to see her son grow up and live a life they both deserved. The fact that public areas like Academy Creek remain memories of such evil acts is chilling, and I hope her story encourages others to look out for each other and trust their instincts when something feels wrong. Sending love to Cheryl's family; she deserved so much better.
