I’ve been digging into old newspaper archives and came across an intriguing detail about Ernest Esker Gwinn. Before his tragic death, Gwinn was known to be a friendly face around Oak Hill, often chatting with folks at the local diner. The fact that he was last seen after cashing his pension check makes me wonder if he was targeted because someone knew he had cash on him. It's chilling to think someone he might have trusted or recognized had ill intentions.
The connection to the so-called 'Mad Butcher' is deeply unsettling. The randomness of these crimes left communities on edge, and it makes you think about how fear can grip a small town. I can't imagine the pain his family went through not knowing what happened to him for nearly a year. They deserved answers and closure, and it’s distressing they never got it.
If anyone has more info on the community’s response during that time or how law enforcement was handling things, I’d love to hear it. The way these cases were woven together paints a terrifying picture of that era.
