Hey everyone,
I've been reading about the tragic case of Fannie Mae Elder—not as widely talked about as it should be—and it just baffles me how the system fell short for these young girls. I wanted to discuss the forensic angle here. It's chilling to think that back in the early '50s, the technology wasn't as advanced as today, yet they managed to figure out the cause of death was arsenic poisoning once they reopened the case.
What’s truly haunting is imagining the investigators piecing together evidence and the realization that Fannie Mae and her sister Annie Pearl didn’t die from pneumonia as initially thought. The work that went into exhuming their bodies and confirming the poisoning just shows the weight they felt to bring justice to these victims and their families. Also, it’s shocking that someone could just get arsenic so easily and use it with such harm without raising alarms sooner.
How do you all feel about the role of forensic science back then? Do you think today's advancements would have changed the course of the investigation and trial? My heart is with the family; they deserved so much better.
Hey everyone, just stumbled across this case and it's been sitting heavily on my mind, especially the part about the insurance policies. It's devastating to think that trust could be so deeply betrayed, especially within a family. I can't imagine how Fannie Mae and her siblings must've felt. Although insurance fraud wasn't as stringently monitored back then, you’d think multiple claims like this would have raised red flags sooner. How do you all feel about the lack of safeguards at the time? With 13 relatives suddenly passing, it should've been a massive warning sign. Anyone else think there should have been more intervention before it got this far? It's just awful to realize this all happened to such a young girl and her family. Sending thoughts to anyone connected to the Elders and hoping their story serves as a powerful reminder of the changes needed to prevent tragedies like this.
