I recently came across the story of Deputy Sheriff Serapio Andrade from Val Verde, Texas, and it really made me think about how law enforcement was so different in the early 1900s. Transporting prisoners in a hack, with limited backup and resources, must have been incredibly challenging and dangerous. It’s sobering to know that Deputy Andrade was shot while trying to maintain peace in Del Rio after those arrested men fired their weapons recklessly. His bravery is clear, and it's poignant to remember the risks these officers took without the benefits of modern protective gear or quick communication methods. I can't imagine the strain and anxiety his family endured after his passing. With seven children and a wife left behind, it must have been a heavy load to carry. Yet, it's touching to hear that his family continued his legacy, with descendants who have also chosen to serve in different capacities. Their dedication seems to be a powerful tribute to Deputy Andrade’s life and sacrifice. Whenever we discuss current-day law enforcement challenges, remembering stories like Deputy Andrade's gives valuable perspective on how far we've come and the sacrifices made by those before us. Let’s keep honoring the memories of those who have paved the way under such dangerous conditions.
