I was reading about the tragic case of Detective Charles L. Stewart, and I can't help but feel for the community and his loved ones who were left without answers. It's a chilling reminder of how dangerous that line of work was (and continues to be) – confronting unknown threats while simply trying to ensure the safety of others. The fact that he was only 27 and had been with the railroad police for just over a year makes me think about how he probably had so much more life he hoped to live. This unsolved case from 1908 must have left a cloud over Amarillo for years, especially since the crime scene was a busy train yard, with people passing through all the time. I wonder if anyone traveling through that day noticed anything suspicious but didn't realize its importance until much later. I hope continued awareness of these cold cases will one day bring some information to light, even though the chances seem slim after such a long time. Detective Stewart's story is a somber chapter of Amarillo's history and a reminder of all those who serve and protect without knowing what each day might bring.
