Hey everyone,
I've been reading up on the unfortunate passing of Corrections Officer John L. Wylie, and I can't help but think about the impact this tragic event had on his wife, Mary, and how she managed in the aftermath. Losing a loved one so suddenly and in such a shocking manner must have been incredibly difficult. Given that his burial place remains unknown, I wonder if that adds another layer of grief for her, making it harder to find closure.
I also found it interesting that during that period in the early 1900s, there wasn't as much focus on workplace safety as we might have today. The incident seemed to have been accepted as a hazard of the job, which is unsettling. It makes me greatly appreciate how far we've come in terms of acknowledging and addressing occupational hazards. Does anyone know if there were any changes made in policies for those working on prison farms following this incident?
My heart goes out to Officer Wylie's family—it's clear that he was doing his best to serve and protect in what was undoubtedly a challenging and perilous profession. Would love to hear others' thoughts on how families coped with such unexpected losses back then.
