Spencer Hodgson, a 31-year-old resident of Klamath River, California, was found dead on April 8, 2019. His body was discovered in a ravine near the Klamath River after a citizen reported seeing a deceased individual. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) responded to the scene and confirmed the identity of the deceased as Spencer Hodgson. An autopsy conducted on April 10, 2019, revealed that Hodgson had died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The
investigation into Hodgson's death was extensive. Detectives from the SCSO, along with forensic technicians, conducted a thorough crime scene investigation. They were able to recover Hodgson's missing pick-up truck with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol's Northern Division Air Operations Unit. The truck's recovery led to additional leads in the case. Despite these efforts, the investigation initially faced challenges, with leads dissipating over time.
In January 2020, nearly a year after Hodgson's murder, the SCSO announced the arrest of Timothy Chase McDonald, a 22-year-old resident of Yreka, California. McDonald's arrest came after a tip led to a follow-up investigation. It was revealed that McDonald had confided in an acquaintance about ambushing Hodgson after discovering flirtatious texts between Hodgson and McDonald's girlfriend. Investigators believe that Hodgson did not know McDonald at the time of the murder.
The case proceeded to trial, and in May 2024, a Siskiyou County jury found Timothy Chase McDonald guilty of first-degree murder for the shooting death of Spencer Hodgson. The SCSO expressed gratitude to their detectives, forensic team, and the District Attorney's Office for their dedication in pursuing justice. They also thanked the witnesses who provided crucial information during the investigation. The Sheriff's Office extended their condolences to Hodgson's family and hoped that the jury's verdict would provide some sense of closure for those affected by the tragic crime.
Throughout the investigation and trial, there were no known links between Hodgson's murder and illicit drug activity. The case highlighted the importance of community involvement, as a "Secret Witness" reward of up to $50,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. This reward, coupled with the diligent efforts of law enforcement, ultimately led to the resolution of the case.
