I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact this has had on the Tyler Junior College community. Cameron Taye Brooks was just a young student trying to make his way in life. His death has left such a void, not just in the hearts of his family and friends, but also among his peers and professors. It’s alarming to think about how vulnerable students are to violence, even in what should be safe havens like their colleges and homes. I really hope the college has provided support resources to those affected by this tragedy. It’s important that we continue discussing ways to improve safety and look out for each other in our communities. Those who knew Cameron always speak about his kind nature and bright future, which makes this loss all the more profound. Keep his loved ones in your thoughts—this pain doesn’t just disappear post-sentencing.
