Hey everyone,
I've been thinking a lot about how the community and law enforcement can work together to rebuild trust, especially in areas like East and West Oakland where violence, unfortunately, seems to take the strongest hold. Reading about Vernon Morgan's tragic death and others in the community has really got me questioning how these neighborhoods can heal and find a path forward.
It seems like the lack of trust between the police and the community is a huge barrier to progress. From what I've gathered, without that trust, witnesses might feel scared to come forward, which in turn means cases like Vernon's remain unsolved. Communication needs to improve for any real change to happen.
Maybe focusing on community-led initiatives could be a step in the right direction? Programs that empower residents to take action could possibly create stronger bonds and help foster safer environments. History has shown us in other circumstances that when the community truly starts acting as a cohesive unit, change can slowly begin.
I find it profoundly unfair that families like Vernon's are left without answers and justice partly due to these larger systemic issues. It's my hope that by delving into these conversations, we can think of ways to support each other and push for meaningful reforms.
Would love to hear thoughts from anyone who's familiar with successful community programs elsewhere, or anyone with ideas on how to tackle these systemic issues.
Stay safe, everyone.
