I've been following the Uvalde tragedy closely, and I find myself deeply moved by the courage Eva Mireles showed in her final moments. The relationship between Eva and her husband, Ruben Ruiz, has particularly caught my attention. I cannot imagine the anguish Ruben must have felt, being so close yet unable to reach her during those crucial moments. The fact that Ruben was detained and prevented from entering the classroom while his wife and others faced the unimaginable is something that leaves me with so many questions about how things were handled that day. It's incredibly painful to think about their last conversation, Eva calling her husband in what must have been such a chaotic and terrifying moment. Hearing about Ruben's attempts to save her, only to be stopped, makes the situation even more gut-wrenching. Eva's family has been understandably vocal, not just in their grief but also in their fight to change the laws and systems that might have failed Eva and those kids. I hold a deep respect for their resilience in the face of such profound loss. Sending thoughts to Eva's family and loved ones. It's stories like these that highlight the need for change so that no more families have to endure this kind of pain.

Just learned about Eva Mireles, and it's such a crushing loss for everyone who knew her. Beyond her bravery, I'm struck by how much she seemed to cherish life and those around her—be it her family, students, or her beloved dog Kane. You can tell she was one of those teachers who truly made a difference every day, not just during that tragic event at Robb Elementary. While the focus has rightfully been on her incredible act of heroism, let’s also remember her as a woman who loved fiercely and lived passionately, enjoying CrossFit and hikes. It's comforting, in a way, to see her family taking up the mantle for change. She was the kind of person who leaves behind ripples of impact long after they're gone. Much love to her family. ?
