On June 24, 2022, 16-year-old Wheatley High School student Daveon Jones was shot and killed near his home in the Hidden Meadows Subdivision of Houston. Jones, described as an honors student and athlete, had arranged to buy a small amount of marijuana from an acquaintance, 18-year-old Tyler Marshall. Marshall picked Jones up after a morning workout and they went toward the Stonefield Terrace subdivision.

Jones’ body was found about two hours later in the backyard of a home on Melody Park Lane, a few hundred feet from his family’s house. Both Marshall and his mother, Yvonne Hinojosa, were charged with murder; Hinojosa was charged despite not firing the gun because she was driving. Both suspects are out on bond and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation.
