I was digging into old newspaper archives and found a little more context on the situation surrounding Posseman Carver's murder. It's baffling to see how law enforcement was constantly in peril during those times, especially when dealing with illegal still operations. The area seemed to be quite hostile towards authorities, and it must have been extremely difficult for families like Carver's to seek justice when there appeared to be an underlying sense of fear or loyalty to local moonshiners. Considering this happened so close to where Sheriff Dawson was killed only a few years earlier, you have to wonder if there was some kind of organized protection for these still operators. It's truly disheartening to know that Posseman Carver's family never saw his killer brought to justice. They must have carried that weight with them for the rest of their lives. If anyone has come across any personal stories or family diaries that mention this incident, it would be fascinating to hear more about that side of things.
