I’ve been diving into the details of the terrible events of January 1, 1908, in Knoxville, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the trauma inflicted on Patrolman Orlando Lee Jarnigan’s family. It's truly devastating to learn that his father died from shock soon after hearing the news of his son’s death. Losing a loved one is tough enough, but the circumstances here are just unbearable. It’s a whole family’s life altered in the blink of an eye, and it makes you wonder how communities can support families left behind in such tragic sectors. My heart goes out to them, even over a century later. Families of officers taken from us too soon need all the support and acknowledgment they can get, especially given the sacrifices their loved ones made. How do we ensure their legacy and pain are not forgotten?
