It's been a few years since Jaylen's tragic passing, yet it still sends ripples through our community. I recently came across a discussion about the impact of that video recorded by the other person Jaylen was with on that fateful day. It’s remarkable—and quite frankly, chilling—how a split-second decision to record something can lead to justice being served. I can't even begin to imagine the kind of courage it took for them to come forward with that evidence, knowing what was at stake. In situations like these, it often seems like young voices go unheard, but this time, Jaylen's companion played such a crucial role. It really emphasizes the power of everyday people in aiding justice. It’s so important that we continue to support the youth in our community and provide them with a safe space to speak up. My heart really goes out to Jaylen’s family and friends who must relive the day each time his story is mentioned, but I'm hopeful that the actions taken that day continue to pave the way for the community's healing. Stay safe, everyone, and be there for each other.

I can't stop thinking about the impact of this awful tragedy on Jaylen's classmates at Hillcrest High. Losing a friend and fellow student like Jaylen at such a young age must be unbelievably difficult to process. I hope the school is providing counseling and other support to help them during this tough time. It's really touching to see the outpouring of support from the Hillcrest family, but it's also a stark reminder of how prevalent gun violence is in our communities. Something needs to change. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this senseless loss.

It’s so tragic to hear about the loss of such a young life. Jaylen Jay Jay Smith’s case really hits home for many of us, especially knowing he was just walking down Hillview Road when it all happened. I can’t stop thinking about his friends from Hillcrest High School. They must be going through an incredibly tough time right now. It’s so sad that the issue of gun violence has touched another family in Memphis. From what I’ve read, the video evidence provided by the surviving victim was key in solving this case. It’s amazing how people can step up in difficult situations to ensure justice is served. It makes me wonder, what more can we do as a community to prevent these tragedies from occurring in the first place? And how do we provide more support for our youth so they aren’t drawn into these cycles of violence? If there's anyone from Memphis who has insight into ongoing community efforts or initiatives aiming to tackle youth violence, I’d love to hear more about what’s being done and what more can be done. Let’s hope Jay Jay’s story sparks meaningful change and awareness. Sending love and strength to everyone mourning his loss. ?
