I was just thinking about the bravery of the kids who hid in the closet during the shooting that took young Kelby’s life. It's hard to fathom how terrifying that must've been for them. I can't imagine the trauma they're going to have to deal with now. They’re just kids who were trying to enjoy the Fourth of July like everyone else. It’s so unfair that they had to experience that kind of fear and loss. I hope the community continues to rally around them and Kelby’s family to offer the support they desperately need during this incredibly tough time. It's a harsh reminder that we need to do better to protect our children.

I just wanted to reflect on the incredible show of solidarity from the Memphis community at Kelby's funeral. Seeing his casket carried through the streets in a horse-drawn carriage, accompanied by friends, neighbors, and classmates, was truly moving. It’s clear that Kelby touched many lives in his short time with us. Vollentine Elementary and the entire community came together to honor his memory in such a heartfelt way. These gestures, while they can’t bring Kelby back, hopefully provide some comfort to his family, knowing they aren’t alone in their grief. This collective support underlines just how vital community bonds are, especially in such difficult times. What are some ways we can continue to support the family and work towards a safer environment for all children in Memphis?

It's so disheartening to see how an innocent day of celebration turned into a tragedy for Kelby and his loved ones. I keep thinking about those other children who had to hide in a closet during the drive-by shooting. It's terrifying to know that such violence erupted from an argument at a gas station—something that should have been a minor incident. I wonder what more we can do as a community to prevent situations from escalating this way. It’s comforting to know that the suspects have been caught, thanks to the brave individuals who came forward with information. I hope justice for Kelby brings some peace to his family, but I also hope this case prompts conversations and actions to address gun violence in our neighborhoods. Every child deserves to feel safe, especially while enjoying something as joyous as a Fourth of July celebration.
