Reading about Officer Joaquin Montijo Jr. and the tragic events of June 13, 1990, I'm struck by the incredible responsibility police officers carry every day. It's hard to wrap my head around how quickly a situation can escalate and the profound impact it can have on families and the community. Officer Montijo's attempt to disarm the suspect was undeniably brave. It's stories like his that remind us of the daily risks officers take to protect us. I can't imagine the grief his family must have endured, losing someone so dedicated to making a difference. Reading up on this case, I wondered how his children have coped with such a loss, and what kind of support they might have received from the community and fellow officers. Keeping the memory of Officer Montijo alive is so important. He deserves to be remembered not just for how he died, but for how he lived and served. Sending my heartfelt thoughts to all those who knew and loved him.
