On the night of September 12, 1987, 50-year-old security guard and maintenance man Dale Kerstetter began his weekend shift at the Corning Glassworks plant in Bradford, Pennsylvania. He was last seen at about 11:00 p.m.; a coworker arriving the next morning found his lunch pail, keys, and a newspaper untouched in the cafeteria. Kerstetter’s pickup was in the parking lot with the keys in the ignition, a full carton of cigarettes, his daypack, and an empty holster for his .22-caliber pistol.
Investigators later found that roughly $250,000 worth of platinum pipe was missing from the plant. Security footage from the night shows a masked person inside the facility; at one point Kerstetter is seen interacting with that individual, and later the masked figure is filmed moving a large heavy bag that some theorize held the stolen platinum or possibly Kerstetter’s body. There were no signs of forced entry or a struggle in the plant.
Authorities and company officials have at times suggested Kerstetter could have been a willing participant, citing reported financial troubles, while his family insists he would never have abandoned his six children and believes he was a victim. The case remains open; Kerstetter and the platinum have never been found. Does anyone have information about Kerstetter’s whereabouts that could help bring answers to his family?
