I've been thinking a lot about how terrifying it must have been for Donna in those final moments. Working to just open the restaurant like she did every day, and suddenly facing such unimaginable violence. It’s horrifying to consider how quickly life can change. We always hear about the crime itself and the aftermath, but it's the human element that's so moving. I imagine Donna probably went to work that morning thinking about what she'd cook for the specials that day or maybe some weekend plans. She had her whole life ahead of her. Her family must carry such a profound sense of loss. Knowing she was doing her job when this all happened must be such a difficult reality to bear. We hardly ever think about the day-to-day impact on the loved ones left behind, how they struggle to navigate life without their daughter or sister. My heart goes out to everyone who knew her. I hope sharing her story and remembering her spirit brings some comfort.
