Hey everyone,
I've been following the case of Jalen Ortelli Handy, and I can't stop thinking about the role social media played in it. It's chilling to imagine that Derrick Small had shared a photo of the gun on Snapchat before everything happened. It's like a spotlight on how these platforms can unwittingly become part of such tragic stories.
I think it's crucial to have conversations about the responsibility we have when sharing images and content online. The communities aware of such posts might sometimes be able to intervene, and perhaps tragedies could be avoided.
Can't even begin to imagine what Jalen’s family is going through. Sending them all my prayers and strength. These are crucial discussions to have in hopes that something good can eventually come out of such a devastating event.
Would love to hear thoughts on this aspect from others here. How can communities and platforms do better in catching these red flags early?
Take care,

I’ve been following the Jalen Ortelli Handy case closely, and something that really struck me was the social media aspect. It’s just so unsettling to think about Derrick Ryan Small posting a photo of the gun on Snapchat before the shooting. Did it never cross his mind what kind of message he was sending or the potential danger that could follow? It’s moments like these that make you wonder how desensitized some people have become about the gravity of their actions. My heart goes out to Jalen’s family. I can’t imagine the pain they must be going through, knowing that a simple photo could have been an ominous sign of the tragedy that unfolded. It also highlights the need to be more mindful and responsible about what we share on social media. What are everyone’s thoughts on how platforms can play a part in these situations?
