I keep thinking about how Frances was just about to start an exciting new chapter in her life, with college and dreams ahead. It's so poignant how she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It makes me think about how many young people full of potential are caught in the crossfire of violence they have nothing to do with. The fact that Frances was the third student from her school to be killed just hits hard. I hope that her story can push for more action against gun violence, especially in areas like Chicago. Her family, friends, and school community must feel such a deep sense of loss knowing how promising her future was. How terrible that a decision to argue and shoot in the street can ripple out to devastate so many lives.
I've been following the Frances Colon case and something that's been on my mind is how deeply this tragedy affected her school community. From what I understand, Frances was not the first student from Roberto Clemente Community Academy to fall victim to gun violence. I can’t imagine what it must be like for the students and staff there—to lose not one, but multiple classmates in such a short span. It's just devastating for a school community to experience this kind of repeated trauma. I hope there are resources and support systems in place to help the students and teachers cope with these losses. It just breaks my heart to think about her classmates, who even in their grief, have to find the strength to carry on with their studies and daily lives. How are schools supposed to function normally when there's such an undercurrent of fear and loss? My thoughts are with them all as they navigate this tough time.
