Does anyone else feel like this heartbreaking incident really underscores the random nature of gun violence? Alva Besst was just going about his day, probably thinking about what to have for dinner or maybe humming a favorite tune, and suddenly he gets caught up in someone else's crossfire. It's just so tragic and so unfair.
I read that he was a big part of his church community. I can only imagine the grief they're all going through now. It's a stark reminder that the effects of such violence ripple out far wider than the immediate victim. Alderman Thompson mentioned how the community came together to support the investigation. It's encouraging to see neighborhoods rallying in the face of tragedy, but it shouldn't have to come to this.
