I recently came across the story of Delia Green, and while it's been well over a century since her tragic death, I can't help but feel the weight of what happened to her. I was struck by how young she was, only 14, and the circumstances that led to her being in such a heartbreaking situation at Christmas. It’s haunting to think of the community gatherings that night, supposed to be filled with celebration, suddenly turning into a tragedy. I stumbled upon some articles from the time, particularly coverage by the Savannah Morning News, and it was saddening to see the way they described the events almost as if they were unfolding today. Witnesses described Delia as hardworking and with so much potential. It’s just maddening to think how her life was cut short over a moment of anger. Those old newspaper reports make it clear that while she became a subject within the blues tradition, she was first and foremost a person, not just a muse or a folklore legend. Has anyone else come across other stories about her from the early 1900s? I'd love to learn more about how the community remembered her beyond the music.
