I was reading up on the events surrounding the Augusta Riot, and I can't help but focus on Sammie McCullough and his friend witnessing the chaos that night. Knowing they were there just watching a building burn, like so many others caught in the midst of all that turmoil, really puts things in perspective. It's chilling to think about how quickly things escalated for them, especially for Sammie, who didn’t even make it back to his car. For his friend to witness such a tragic moment, seeing Sammie fall and an officer standing there with a weapon raised—it must have been an incredibly traumatic experience that stayed with them forever. What frustrates me is the lack of accountability that followed. Despite investigations at both state and federal levels, and the involvement of the Civil Rights Division, the fact that no one was held responsible for Sammie's death really speaks volumes about the systemic issues of that time. It just leaves you with a lingering sense of injustice, thinking about how things might be different if it had been handled more transparently. We need to remember Sammie and all the others who lost their lives during that riot, as their stories are vital in understanding the broader fight for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
