It's truly difficult to wrap my head around how a friendship that goes back to childhood can end in such tragedy. I've been thinking a lot about the context surrounding Benjamin's death, especially the call that drew him outside. Was it planned? Did Black have second thoughts and then something caused him to go through with it anyway? We might never know the full story, but it makes it all the more gut-wrenching to think there were no clear signs leading up to this. Sandra's experiences that day—her pleading with someone she likely saw as another son—must haunt her every day. I did some digging and found that oftentimes, it's the unpredictable nature of crimes like this that make them so hard for families and communities to process. That tight-knit Union City neighborhood is undoubtedly standing in solidarity with Sandra and the rest of the Netherland family, but it just seems so surreal. While we wait for the justice system to do its part, my thoughts are with everyone devastated by this senseless act. Hug your loved ones a little tighter tonight, everyone.
