Where is the discussion?
Hello, I’m Joshua’s mom. The town of Milan is very small, it has one caution light and downtown area is mostly dilapidated. Spires was born and raised in the area. My son Joshua had moved to Georgia due to a pending divorce stemming from his drinking and he had just started using drugs. I was not aware at the time but I became aware. We had put him in a sober house rehab and he didn’t want to stay there long. I had a newly purchased older home I intended to use as a rental. It needed a little work so we decided to let him come up and live free in the house while fixing it. Through the course of events and continued intoxicated behavior that was escalating, we moved him into an apartment on our property. A month later he was in a fit of rage and I told him to leave. He had become unrecognizable. He was gone for some months and when he returned he was basically homeless. This broke my heart. He was so smart and talented and funny. It seemed like he had given up on the real world. He wanted to do odd jobs, drink and not have a lot of responsibilities. IMO. At some point his female companion I guess left also and Joshua was living in one of the abandoned buildings. Spires knew Josh but they were not friends. Spires had a very long-term, dangerous meth habit. He was in and out of the mental hospital in the preceding months. His parents tried to get him picked up again just a day or two before Christmas. Small town sheriffs do what they want. He’s known to them so they were reluctant to take him in. Spires had a serious primary delusion, he was absolutely convinced that every single person in town was having an affair with his wife. He was known to aggressively approach random people and accuse them of messing with his wife. This is actually how Joshua met him 2 years before. It was winter time, he was not allowed in his parents home due to being violent and delusional. Apparently he slept outside on the ground and his father left for work the next day and woke him up and told him to go home. The parents had told the sheriff that he had a gun and this wasn’t his first gun related incident.
So from what I’ve heard, he got up, possibly angry or annoyed l, definitely high on meth and from where his parents house is, if he got up walked around, my son, Joshua, was just probably the first person he saw. Many people including his parents knew something like this was going to happen. My son was shot apparently right outside the doorway and when the shots were fired, an employee of the post office looked outside and saw him leaving. His mother told me that she was in town when it happened and she and his wife had no doubt that he was involved. He has been in jail since then, no word on a trial and he has gotten extra charges while in jail. I feel for his family because they are decent people but they need to keep the right and moral perspective. He is guilty of cold blooded murder and he needs to face the consequences. It sucks all the way around. But it sucks the most for my son, his children and me, his mother. It’s a nightmare really. Thank you for your interest in my son’s case.
