I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of international student safety in the aftermath of tragedies like what happened to Sai Kiran. It's incredibly distressing how someone can be targeted just for appearing vulnerable or unfamiliar with their surroundings. Sai Kiran came to Miami with dreams and aspirations—something many of us can relate to. I wonder if universities and local communities could collaborate more closely to provide resources or workshops focused on safety and cultural acclimation for international students. It hurts to think about a promising life cut short while trying to live out those dreams. My heart goes out to Sai Kiran's family and friends. They not only lost a loved one but also entrusted us with his care. It's up to us to ensure that these senseless acts of violence don’t happen again. Anybody have thoughts on what more can be done to protect students from such heartbreaking situations?

I've been following Sai Kiran's case for a while, and something that really strikes me is the sheer courage he showed in his final moments. It’s so painful to imagine what his family must have gone through, having him so far away from home. I can’t help but think about the immense bravery it takes to stand up against an armed attacker, even if it’s just to protect something as simple as a cellphone. It speaks volumes about his character and the type of person he must have been—strong and principled. The fact that Brandon Figueroa and Jonathan Rivera-Gunera were both apprehended and charged is a relief, but it doesn’t bring Sai Kiran back or erase the pain felt by those who knew him. It’s just so tragic that his academic journey ended like this. I just hope that his story encourages others to speak up against violence in their communities.
