I've been following the discussions about the heartbreaking events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and I can't help but think about the incredible loss of Carmen Schentrup. It's hard to grasp the potential that was stolen from her and the others that day. Carmen was one of those rare students who not only excelled academically but was also filled with kindness and a zest for life. It’s truly tragic that such a bright future was cut short. In reading more about the case, I discovered that Carmen's family and others affected have been tirelessly advocating for change. It is unimaginable what they are going through, yet they have turned their grief into a powerful call for reform. Their resilience and determination are admirable and offer a glimmer of hope that Carmen’s passing wasn't in vain. The lawsuits against Broward County highlight an essential issue—accountability from authorities. If any good can come from this terrible event, it's the hope that schools and officials are more proactive in preventing such incidents. The system needs to protect its students with everything it has, and changes are long overdue. My heart goes out to everyone affected, and I sincerely hope that Carmen’s legacy can inspire a safer future for students everywhere.
