I always find it incredibly hard to stomach when I read about cases like Justin Vancleff Heilig’s. Imagining him, injured and terrified, desperately knocking on doors in Hyde Park that night just breaks me. Those moments must have felt like an eternity for him—and sadly, none of the doors opened in time to offer the help he so desperately needed. Something that deeply resonates with me is the role of the community in this investigation. The neighbor who called the police upon hearing gunshots at 4:30 a.m. truly did their part. Who knows what might have happened if the authorities hadn’t been alerted so quickly? The involvement of local residents and their willingness to check surveillance cameras and pass on crucial details to law enforcement is reassuring at least a little bit—it's a reminder that, even in a world where such terrible things can happen, people still care enough to step up and say something. Despite all this, my heart goes out to Justin's family and friends who are left to grieve such a senseless loss. I hope the continued progression of the case brings them some semblance of peace in the long run.
