I've been thinking a lot about the courage it must have taken for those at the yoga studio that day. Dr. Nancy Van Vessem was someone who dedicated her life to helping others, through her work at Capital Health Plan and as a faculty member at FSU. It's so tragic that someone with such a positive impact on the community was lost in such a senseless act. I can't help but feel for her family, friends, and colleagues who must still be reeling from this loss. One thing that stands out to me is how someone with Beierle's history of disturbing behavior wasn't more closely monitored. It's deeply concerning how these red flags weren't enough to prevent this tragedy. I truly hope, if anything can come from this, that it leads to more stringent measures against individuals with known patterns of violent or misogynistic behavior. The fact that he could just walk into a place, filled with peace and serenity, and commit such an atrocious act is unsettling. Anyone who knew Dr. Van Vessem, or even just knew of her, speaks so highly of her compassion and intelligence. Her loss is a profound one for everyone she touched. Let's continue to keep the focus on remembering her and working towards a safer community where such violence is not tolerated.
