I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact this tragedy had on the international student community at USC. My heart goes out to Xinran Ji's family, who showed incredible strength throughout this painful ordeal. The fact that they traveled from China to be present during the trial is a testament to their love and determination for justice. It's difficult to imagine the depths of their loss.
This case really emphasized the need for better safety measures around campus, especially for international students who might not be as familiar with the local area. I remember reading that USC has since implemented more security and awareness programs, which is a positive step, but it's just so sad that it took such an awful event to bring about these changes.
Has anyone here been to USC or knows if those new measures have made a noticeable difference in feeling safer? Keeping Xinran Ji and his family in our thoughts.
Has anyone else been following the trial transcripts? I was reading through some of the testimony, and it's just so hard to digest. The sheer brutality of what Andrew Garcia and the others did to Xinran Ji is beyond comprehension. I can't stop thinking about the moment Ji was trying to make his way back to his apartment. The level of determination and strength it must have taken to get there, despite everything—it’s haunting. It's clear he was a fighter, and it breaks my heart for his family and friends who have to live with the loss. One small comfort is knowing that those responsible are facing justice, but it's hard to imagine the pain ever really going away for those who loved him. Also, I'm curious about what additional measures USC has in place now to protect international students. It's such an important step for them to feel safe in their home away from home.
