I’ve been reading about Michelle Marie Fournier, and I just can’t stop thinking about her little boy. It’s hard to wrap my head around how much his young life was turned upside down so suddenly. Losing a parent in such a violent and public way is unimaginable, and on top of it all, he had to deal with the aftermath of his father’s actions. I hope he’s surrounded by a strong support system of family and friends. It’s times like these when a community really needs to step up to offer love and stability to someone so young and vulnerable. Anyone know if any initiatives were set up specifically for him or if there were any tributes or lasting memorials in Michelle’s honor? It just feels important that he knows how loved and cherished she was by everyone who knew her.
I’ve been thinking a lot about Michelle Marie Fournier and the others who lost their lives at Salon Meritage. It’s so difficult to comprehend how a custody dispute could take such a tragic turn. Michelle was just going about her day, doing what she loved as a cosmetologist, and it’s devastating to think her life was cut short in such a senseless way.
The level of violence and premeditation involved—Dekraai showing up armed and wearing body armor—is shocking. I can’t even begin to imagine the fear everyone felt in those terrible minutes. And their families... they’ve had to go through so much. At least the community has shown incredible support. I read about the candlelight vigil and the fund that was set up. It’s not enough to erase the pain, but it's heartening to see people coming together in such dark times.
But we still have to ask ourselves: how do we prevent such tragedies in the future? Discussions on gun control and domestic violence need to continue, but they often feel overshadowed by politics. For Michelle and the others, I hope we can learn and push for change. They deserved so much more.
