Has anyone else noticed how Gary Thorbjornson’s case seems to get overshadowed by other maritime incidents? I came across the memorial at Marshall Point Lighthouse while visiting Port Clyde, and it’s striking how many names are on there. It’s a somber reminder of how dangerous fishing can be, but Gary’s story feels particularly eerie to me. The two crew members survived—why didn’t they have more information on what happened during those final moments? Even if the vessel went down quickly, the circumstances seem so strange that there wasn’t more evidence left or more clarity on why he didn’t make it out. It makes me wonder if there are safety protocols or changes in regulations that could’ve prevented not just his disappearance, but others too. Anyone from the area have thoughts on what's been done since then to improve safety? It feels like there must be lessons learned from this tragedy.

Has anyone else read about the memorial dedication for Gary Thorbjornson at the Marshall Point Lighthouse? I've seen pictures, and it looks like they did a really nice job honoring not just him but all the local fishermen who've been lost at sea. I think it's a beautiful way to keep their memory alive and to acknowledge the risks these folks take every day. It's so important for communities like Port Clyde to have spaces where people can come together and remember those they've lost, especially when there’s no physical place to visit for closure. What do you guys think about these kinds of memorials? Do they help with the healing process, or do they serve a different purpose?
