I can't stop thinking about how scary public spaces can sometimes turn out to be. The Soto Gold Line station is a place many people pass through daily without any issues, and yet Kevin Clay Thomas' story shows how quickly things can escalate. He was just a young guy living his life, likely with dreams and aspirations like the rest of us. It's terrifying to think how his life was cut short over something as senseless as an attempted robbery. What really strikes me is the bravery of his friend, who had to experience such a traumatic event and somehow managed to escape—one can only imagine how deeply this will affect him forever. The fact that they reportedly were not involved in any gang activities underscores how random and unfair life can be sometimes. The part that gets me is that the assailants still haven't been caught more than eight years later. With all the surveillance cameras and technology available, it feels almost medieval to have these kinds of unresolved crimes in such a busy city. I hope that someone who knows anything will finally step up and provide the authorities with much-needed information. Nobody deserves to be left without answers, especially Kevin's loved ones. I sincerely wish his family finds justice and peace someday.
