I've been following Denell A. Baker's case since it first made the news, and something that sticks with me is the impact his loss has had on not just his family, but the whole Fruit Belt community. It's devastating to consider how his life was violently cut short and how such loss echoes through the neighborhood. The fact that his family, especially people like his uncle Emanuel, have turned their grief into action and advocacy is both poignant and deeply admirable. They’ve shined a light on the rampant gun violence affecting Buffalo and have managed to drive some conversations about how we can tackle this ongoing crisis. It's hard not to feel for Denell’s loved ones, who are left with an irreplaceable hole in their lives. I just hope that someday these conversations lead to real change and a safer community for everyone. If anything, the trial and convictions show that justice, while tardy, can offer some solace, though it can never truly heal the wounds left behind.
