Hey everyone, I’ve been diving deep into Fred Comstock's disappearance and something that's been bugging me is the plan for him to make that hike solo from Vogelsang to Tuolumne Meadows. I was looking at a map, and it's quite a trek. It's puzzling that he left his wallet behind—almost like he expected to return to the car soon. Has there been any discussion or other cases where hikers have gone missing on similar routes in Yosemite around that time? It seems like such a risky plan, considering how vast and challenging that terrain can be. Also, does anyone know more about the female companion and her son? Like, did they have any hiker-savvy or connections to the area? Hope we can piece more of this together.
I've been curious about Fred Comstock's case for some time, especially regarding the choice for him to hike solo from Vogelsang to Tuolumne Meadows. From what I understand, the distance and ruggedness of the terrain seem pretty daunting for a solo hike, especially for someone less familiar with the area. Does anyone know if there were any discussions or hesitations from Fred or his companions about him going alone? It strikes me as odd that he was the one retrieving the car instead of staying with the group. Could there have been another reason for Fred to be trusted with such a task, given they’d only recently met? I'm wondering if anyone more familiar with the park's layout or hiking culture in the 70s has some insights. Maybe he misjudged the difficulty or the time it would take, but it's just strange that he vanished without a trace. Any thoughts?
