On the early morning of July 4, 2019, 15-year-old Khalil Lephonzo Johnson was shot in Edgewood, Maryland. Deputies answered a call just after midnight to a home on Eloise Lane where they found Johnson with a gunshot wound to his upper body; he was later pronounced dead at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Investigators reported he had been shot in the area of Brookside Drive and Eloise Lane and then ran into the nearby residence. Authorities described the incident as a targeted attack and said the area had a history of gang-related activity.

Witnesses said they initially heard what sounded like firecrackers before gunshots and screams, and a group of people celebrating scattered. An arrest followed within days: 18-year-old Rahzir Meyers of Abingdon was charged with first-degree murder and related offenses. Prosecutors presented surveillance video showing people on Brookside Drive and at least one person firing toward Johnson, and Meyers’ DNA was found on a laser gun attachment recovered at the scene. A jury later convicted Meyers of first-degree murder and related gang and firearm charges and he received life plus 45 years in the Division of Corrections.

Did anyone in the community see activity on Brookside Drive that night or recognize the people in the surveillance footage?
