It's haunting to think about how the tragic fate of Officer Willis T. "Zonk" Foster might have taken a different turn. I can't help but wonder about the suspect's movements that night as the chase unfolded near the old Wayside Inn. What was it about that specific spot that became the setting for such a grim outcome? The woods there must have offered some cover, but was there perhaps a known hideout for bootleggers, or was it mere chance that led them there? The fact that the suspects were acquitted despite being charged makes me question the thoroughness of the evidence collection back then. Was key evidence overlooked, or did the rough terrain of the woods make it difficult to gather anything substantial? It’s deeply troubling to think about his family never seeing justice served. Foster’s bravery in confronting unlawful activities is undeniable, but it's so upsetting that his young children had to grow up without their father because of it. If anyone knows more about the history of the area at that time, I'd be interested to hear if there were ongoing tensions with law enforcement and these bootlegging rings. It might shed some light on the challenges Officer Foster faced regularly in his line of duty.

I recently read about the case of Willis T. "Zonk" Foster, and something that really stood out to me was the sheer bravery he showed by pursuing those bootleggers, even knowing the risks involved. It's just tragic that he had to pay the ultimate price for trying to keep his community safe. I can't even begin to imagine the pain his family must have endured, losing him so suddenly and violently. The fact that the suspects were acquitted must have been a devastating blow to them, not to mention to his fellow officers. Does anyone know if any further investigations were ever conducted, or if there's been any new information uncovered over the years? It's a tough pill to swallow knowing his killers might have completely gotten away with it.
