I recently came across an old newspaper clipping about the Orangeburg Massacre and couldn’t help but feel a deep sadness for the families of Henry Ezekial Smith and the other young men involved. One detail that really struck me was how the local community reacted in the aftermath. It’s hard to imagine how terrifying and confusing it must have been for them to not only process such a profound loss but also navigate the tense racial climate of that time.
I wonder if anyone here has more information about the community's response following the tragedy? I’ve read that South Carolina State College played a crucial role in both mourning the victims and continuing the fight for civil rights thereafter. Was there any form of local support set up for the families or other students who were injured that night? Understanding the community's healing journey might shed some light on how they gathered strength to keep pursuing justice and equality despite such a harrowing event. Would love to hear any insights or stories anyone might have.
