I’ve been following the tragic case of Detuan Jenkins, and I can’t help but think about how vital it is for communities to have safe spaces for their youth. When I was a teen, the local community center was a haven for us. It breaks my heart to see what happens when these resources get taken away. The Charles "Lind" Brown Activity Center could have made a difference for young people in Beaufort, providing a safe area to gather and participate in positive activities. I really hope this tragedy leads to some renewed focus on preventing youth violence and restoring important facilities that can keep our kids safe and engaged. Sending love and strength to Detuan’s family and friends during this difficult time.
