I'm incredibly saddened by the loss of young Ien Coleman. He was just 14, with his whole life ahead of him, and it’s devastating to think about the impact this has had on his family and friends. What I find particularly concerning in this case is the absence of adult supervision and safe practices around firearms. It’s hard to understand why a 17-year-old had access to a gun in the first place. I feel like this points to a larger issue that perhaps needs more discussion and action.
I have so many questions about the environment these kids were in and how they ended up in a vacant apartment with a firearm. It seems like there were multiple layers of failure here, from parental oversight to community safety measures. The fact that Joshua instructed others not to call the police just adds another layer of tragedy. It's essential that we try to get to the root of these problems and push for safer practices and resources that keep guns out of young, untrained hands.
Hearing incidents like these are difficult, but maybe they can be used as a stepping stone for change. Let's remember Ien and support efforts to improve safety for other kids out there.
