Originally from Vadodara, Gujarat, India, she had moved to the U.S.
in 2016 to pursue her education, initially attending the University of New Hampshire before transferring to NYIT. She was close to completing her master's degree in electrical engineering and had secured a job in California that she was scheduled to begin after graduation. Bhagat was last seen wearing colorful pajama pants and a black T-shirt. She is described as being 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing between 150 and 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. She is fluent in English, Hindi, and Urdu and has friends in the South Plainfield, New Jersey, area.
The circumstances surrounding Mayushi Bhagat's disappearance are considered suspicious. Her family received text messages from her phone on May 1, 2019, stating that she was fine and would return home on May 3. However, her father expressed concern that the messages were written in broken English, which was uncharacteristic of his daughter who was fluent in the language.
